Why go

The villages and rainforest make the coast feel a world away.

Maleny and Montville give the weekend food, galleries and an easy base; Kondalilla, Mapleton and the Glass House Mountains add the landscape. The trick is to pair one village with one walk, not race the whole range.

Do these first

Three reasons to make the trip.

01

Maleny and Montville

Two distinct Blackall Range villages for local food, galleries, gardens and a slower overnight base; avoid treating them as identical shopping stops.

Half day
02

Kondalilla National Park

Rainforest and waterfall walks range from the shorter Picnic Creek circuit to a steeper falls circuit, with stairs and no wheelchair-accessible tracks.

1–4 hours
03

Glass House Mountains lookout

A sealed-road, 24-hour day-use stop with a lower lookout accessible with assistance and a broad view across the volcanic peaks.

A very good day

Your Sunshine Coast Hinterland itinerary.

Start with the Glass House Mountains view, base the afternoon around Maleny or Montville, and choose a waterfall track only after checking conditions.

  1. Take in the Glass House Mountains

Use the official lookout rather than adding an exposed summit climb to an already full day.

  2. Settle into Maleny

Walk the town, choose local produce or a gallery and avoid over-scheduling the village section.

  3. Give lunch some time

Book a hinterland table or continue to Montville for an unhurried afternoon on the range.

  4. Choose the right nature stop

Use Kondalilla only if the stairs and conditions suit; choose an accessible lookout or shorter signed stop otherwise.

Before you go

The useful details.

Parking

Village parking and popular waterfall car parks become busy on fine weekends. Kondalilla's walking area begins below the car park via a steep, stepped approach; arrive early and use marked spaces.

Accessibility

Glass House Mountains lookout's lower viewing area and facilities are accessible with assistance. Kondalilla has no wheelchair-accessible tracks or facilities due to steep terrain; nearby Mapleton Falls has an accessible lookout.

Dogs

Domestic animals are not permitted in Kondalilla or other national parks. Check town, accommodation and private-venue policies separately.

Conditions

Waterfalls and creeks become dangerous after rain. Keep behind fences, do not cross flooded creeks and never enter a park when closure signs are displayed.
