Why go

Queensland wine country with a genuinely wild second act.

Base yourself around Stanthorpe, choose only a few producers and reserve a full conditions-led morning for Girraween. The contrast between local tables and enormous granite tors is the reason to drive this far.

Do these first

Three reasons to make the trip.

01

Girraween National Park

Choose a signed walk for the group's capability and current conditions; wet granite, edges and sudden cold changes all deserve respect.

Half day
02

A small cellar-door circuit

Book two or three well-matched producers with a tour or designated driver rather than racing across the region.

Half day
03

Stanthorpe and local produce

Use the town as a real base for cafés, farm produce, a creek walk and an unhurried meal—not only a refuelling stop.

2–4 hours

A very good day

Your Granite Belt itinerary.

Separate the tasting day from the walking day, book transport when drinking and prepare for cold changes even when Brisbane feels mild.

  1. Settle into Stanthorpe

Arrive before dark where possible, collect local produce and prepare layers, water and footwear for the park.

  2. Taste without driving

Use a booked tour or designated driver, leave room for lunch and avoid treating every cellar door as compulsory.

  3. Walk Girraween

Check live alerts, weather and track grades, then choose a walk the entire group can complete safely.

  4. Leave a daylight margin

Return through Stanthorpe for one final stop and begin the long drive before fatigue or darkness becomes the plan.

Before you go

The useful details.

Parking

Stanthorpe and cellar-door parking varies by venue. Girraween's visitor area is reached by sealed road from the western entrance; the alternative route via Eukey includes gravel sections. Never stop on narrow roads for an unplanned photo.

Accessibility

The Girraween visitor information building is wheelchair accessible. Bald Rock Creek day-use and selected camping amenities have accessible facilities, while most granite walks are uneven, steep or inaccessible.

Dogs

Domestic animals are not permitted in Girraween National Park. Rules at wineries, accommodation and council reserves vary; confirm every stop before bringing a dog.

Conditions

Never dive or jump into Bald Rock Creek: Queensland Parks warns of variable depth, submerged rocks, logs and fast flows. Treat the park as a walking destination, not a swimming stop.
