Why go

A mountain day with far more texture than a single famous stop.

Mount Macedon's forest, Memorial Cross and Sanatorium Lake create a satisfying loop. The surrounding towns make the trip work in almost any weather without turning it into an attraction checklist.

Do these first

Three reasons to make the trip.

01

Mount Macedon Memorial Cross

A significant Victorian war memorial reached by a sealed path, with broad views from the mountain precinct.

1–2 hours
02

Sanatorium Lake Eco-Trail

A shady forest loop with a picnic area nearby; lake parking is limited, so use designated spaces only.

1–2 hours
03

Camels Hump

The range's highest peak, reached by a short but steep walk with exposed rock and changing mountain conditions.

1–2 hours

A very good day

Your Macedon Ranges itinerary.

Build the day around two outdoor stops, carry warm layers and keep the route compact.

  1. Begin at the Memorial Cross

Take the sealed approach and allow time for the lookout rather than treating it as a drive-by stop.

  2. Choose your forest walk

Use Sanatorium Lake for a gentler loop or Camels Hump for a steeper outing suited to the group.

  3. Eat in a nearby town

Choose Macedon or Woodend and make lunch the warm, unhurried middle of the day.

  4. Finish without overreaching

Add a picnic ground or scenic drive only if weather, daylight and energy still suit.

Before you go

The useful details.

Parking

Use designated areas at the Memorial Cross, picnic grounds and Sanatorium Lake. Parking at the lake is limited and roadside parking is not permitted.

Accessibility

Sealed paths to the Memorial Cross and Major Mitchell lookout suit many mobility-impaired visitors, although steps remain at the Cross. Harbison, McGregors and Days picnic grounds have wheelchair access.

Dogs

Dog rules vary by site. Some Mount Macedon walks allow dogs on lead while other locations prohibit them, so check the specific Parks Victoria page for every stop.

Conditions

Swimming and fishing are not permitted at Sanatorium Lake. Mountain weather changes quickly; pack warm clothing, water and suitable footwear even when Melbourne is mild.
