Dandenong Ranges

Mountain-ash forest, fern gullies, hill villages and cool-climate gardens make this one of Melbourne's easiest genuinely green escapes.

Why go

The city disappears remarkably quickly beneath the mountain ash.

The best Dandenongs day is not a race between attractions. Pair one proper forest walk with one hill village and one garden, then let weather and daylight decide the rest.

Do these first

Three reasons to make the trip.

01

Sherbrooke Forest

Tall mountain ash, tree ferns and lyrebird country, with signed walks from several picnic grounds.

1–3 hours
02

Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden

A cool-climate garden in Olinda with a 3.5-kilometre sealed main circuit that includes steep sections.

2–3 hours
03

Sassafras and Olinda

Two compact hill villages suited to a slow lunch, browsing and a break between forest and garden stops.

2–3 hours

A very good day

Your Dandenong Ranges itinerary.

Choose one forest area, avoid criss-crossing the ranges and check park notices before leaving.

  1. Walk beneath the mountain ash

Choose a signed Sherbrooke-area walk that suits the group's ability and current track conditions.

  2. Slow down in a hill village

Stop in Sassafras or Olinda rather than trying to cover every township.

  3. Make lunch the pause

Choose one village venue and leave room for weekend queues.

  4. Finish in the garden

Walk only as much of the Botanic Garden circuit as the terrain, weather and closing time allow.

Before you go

The useful details.

Parking

Popular trailheads and picnic areas fill quickly on fine weekends. Use marked spaces only; consider the train for village-focused days and arrive early for the 1000 Steps.

Accessibility

Several picnic grounds have published access assessments. The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden's main circuit is sealed but steep, and unassisted wheelchair use is not recommended.

Dogs

Dogs are not allowed in Dandenong Ranges National Park or the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, except eligible assistance dogs. Rules differ in other gardens and town areas.

Conditions

This is a forest-and-gardens escape rather than a swimming trip. The national park closes on Extreme fire-danger days and selected areas have night closures from 16 August to 19 November 2026.
