Why go

A proper change of pace before Adelaide has disappeared in the mirror.

In 20 to 30 minutes the city gives way to cooler air, village streets and forested slopes. Pair one landscape stop with a town or producer; the Hills feel most generous when the day is not overfilled.

Do these first

Three reasons to make the trip.

01

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden

Choose an access-appropriate route through a steep, seasonal landscape; the flat Lakeside Trail begins at the lower car park.

1–3 hours
02

Hahndorf or a Hills village

Pick one village for a walk, local produce and lunch instead of spending the day moving between main streets.

2–4 hours
03

Mount Lofty Summit or Cleland

Add an elevated view or nature stop according to the weather, current alerts and the group's mobility.

1–3 hours

A very good day

Your Adelaide Hills itinerary.

Build the day around one garden or nature experience, one village and one meal, checking gradients and access before you go.

  1. Start with the landscape

Visit the garden, summit or Cleland early and choose a route that genuinely fits the group.

  2. Settle into one village

Walk a main street slowly, browse local producers and make lunch the anchor.

  3. Choose one final stop

Add a booked producer, gallery or short nature stop rather than racing across the Hills.

  4. Leave before fatigue

Check traffic and conditions, then return to Adelaide with daylight margin in poor weather.

Before you go

The useful details.

Parking

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden has ticketed upper and lower car parks with accessible bays. Parking and road conditions vary elsewhere; check each stop and avoid blocking narrow Hills roads.

Accessibility

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is very hilly, but its lower-car-park Lakeside Trail is a flat bitumen path. Accessible bays and toilets are provided; other gardens, trails and heritage venues vary.

Dogs

Pets are prohibited at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, while assistance dogs are welcome. National parks and individual venues have their own rules; check every stop.

Conditions

Weather and fire conditions can change quickly in the Hills. Check official park alerts and Traffic SA before travelling, and use booked transport or a designated driver if tasting wine.
