Distance is not the same thing as a good itinerary.
A useful road trip protects time for the places you came to see. These routes favour two-night stops, sensible geographic loops and fewer daily promises—not a checklist of lookouts.
Days and drive times are planning estimates, not guarantees. Live traffic, roadworks, weather, fire conditions and scenic stops can change the journey substantially. Confirm conditions before leaving and never plan to a deadline at the wheel.
Give the coast enough time for surf towns, rainforest and limestone country instead of turning the Twelve Apostles into a very long photo stop.
Day 1: Melbourne to Apollo Bay
Enter through Torquay, keep the ocean beside you through the Surf Coast and sleep around Apollo Bay. Choose a few lookouts rather than stopping at every turnout.
Join Ballarat and Bendigo by the official signed touring route, using the smaller goldfields towns as part of the journey rather than empty space between two cities.
Day 1: Melbourne to Ballarat
Arrive with time for Ballarat’s gold-rush history, grand streets and Lake Wendouree, then stay for dinner rather than driving on.
Follow the signed route through historic townships such as Creswick, Clunes, Talbot, Maryborough and Dunolly. Pick two or three; trying to collect every town defeats the point.
Day 3: Bendigo and Melbourne
Give Bendigo a proper morning of living culture, gardens or underground history. Bendigo Art Gallery is closed for redevelopment, so check its off-site program before planning around it.
The official loop combines the Great Ocean Road, Grampians and Ballarat. Five days is the minimum we would choose; seven lets each landscape feel like a destination.
Days 1–2: Great Ocean Road
Travel through the Surf Coast and Otways to the Twelve Apostles coast. Two nights keep the famous road from becoming a windscreen marathon.
Turn north for Gariwerd / the Grampians. Official regional guidance places the Twelve Apostles to Dunkeld drive at about two hours before stops; stay longer if walking is the priority.
Finish through western Victoria with a Ballarat night before returning to Melbourne. Add a seventh day when you want a genuine Grampians walk rather than a lookout-only visit.
What is the best Victorian road trip for a first visit?
Choose the Great Ocean Road over three days. It is straightforward to follow, visually varied and much more rewarding when you sleep near the coast instead of attempting a rushed Melbourne return.
How many days do I need for the Great Ocean Road?
Three days is the practical sweet spot for a first trip. The official regional guide publishes one-, three- and five-day options; one day is possible, but it requires substantial driving and far fewer stops.
Can I combine Ballarat and Bendigo in one road trip?
Yes. Visit Victoria’s Goldfields Way Touring Route connects them through historic townships including Creswick, Clunes, Talbot, Maryborough and Dunolly. Three days gives you one city night at each end and a useful middle day.
What should I check before a Victorian road trip?
Check live navigation, road closures, fire danger, park alerts, weather, fuel range and attraction opening hours. Drive estimates are planning guides only and do not include traffic, meal breaks, walks or lookout stops.
