The classic route rewards restraint. Follow the coast through Lorne, sleep around Apollo Bay, cross the Otways and reach the limestone coast without turning every lookout into a race against the clock.

Before you go
Use signed parking at towns, lookouts and park sites. The Twelve Apostles and other major stops become very busy; never stop on road shoulders for photographs.
The Twelve Apostles precinct and several coastal lookouts provide accessible parking and viewing options, but beach steps and forest tracks vary. Check each Parks Victoria site before travelling.
Dogs are not permitted in Port Campbell National Park or most Great Otway National Park sites, except eligible assistance dogs. A few signed areas elsewhere allow dogs; verify every stop.
The Southern Ocean can be cold, rough and unpredictable. Choose patrolled beaches, swim between the flags and stay away from cliff edges, rock platforms and unpatrolled coves.
