Fraser Coast · Queensland
A World Heritage sand-island journey on Butchulla Country, where perched lakes, tall rainforest and an immense beach highway demand permits, tide planning and wongari-safe behaviour.
Current and upcoming travel alerts
Temporary access and safety advice, checked against the responsible authority.
Lake Allom toilets and water taps are closed for urgent repairs through 1 November. Happy Valley's beach access ramp is fully closed with a signed detour, while Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk, Cornwells Road and Northern Forests scenic drive also have works or detours. Check the current list before fixing each day's route.
Why go
K’gari rewards a guided trip or an experienced high-clearance 4WD plan with sufficient time. Ferry check-in, permits, tides, changing tracks and wongari safety are core parts of the journey—not optional admin.
Do these first
A celebrated perched lake requiring respectful use, no food at the lakeshore and enough time to avoid arriving or leaving under tide pressure.
2–3 hoursWalk through rainforest growing on sand, subject to the current boardwalk works and any ranger closures.
1–2 hoursTreat the beach as a changing 4WD road, not an ordinary shoreline; tides, washouts, aircraft, pedestrians and wildlife all affect the route.
Half dayA very good day
Choose a guided or self-drive transport model first, then build every day around live alerts, tides and realistic sand-road travel.
Confirm ferry, vehicle or tour, permits, accommodation, tides, park alerts and recovery expectations before leaving Brisbane.
Use the crossing and first sand roads to learn the conditions; do not chase a distant landmark against the tide.
Pair Boorangoora with one forest place, following closures, food rules and wongari-safe behaviour throughout.
Choose a limited route with an experienced driver or guide and retain enough margin for the return ferry.

Before you go
Independent travel requires a suitable high-clearance 4WD, a vehicle access permit and booked ferry. Beach driving is tide-dependent; Queensland Parks says avoid driving for two hours either side of high tide and leave generous contingency.
Deep sand, beach access and remote tracks substantially limit independent access. Ferry, resort, tour and visitor-site support varies; contact each provider about the full journey before paying.
Domestic animals are not permitted in the national park. Assistance-animal requirements must be discussed with Queensland Parks and ferry or accommodation operators before travel.
Ocean beaches are unpatrolled and also function as roads. Check official advice for every freshwater place, keep food away from lakeshores and never assume water depth or conditions are safe.
Conditions can change. Confirm access, closures, fire restrictions and local rules before travelling.
