Yorke Peninsula

A broad Gulf peninsula of copper-country towns, long beaches and the wild coast of Dhilba Guuranda–Innes National Park that deserves more than a hurried weekend loop.

Why go

The peninsula starts close. Its best wild coast does not.

Yorke Peninsula begins just over an hour from Adelaide, but its shoreline runs for hundreds of kilometres. Choose the Copper Coast or the southern park as the weekend's centre; combining both is a longer road trip, not a clever shortcut.

Do these first

Three reasons to make the trip.

01

Dhilba Guuranda–Innes National Park

Build a full day around signed coastal walks, lookouts and heritage after checking live alerts; Pondalowie Bay's surfers' viewing platform is currently closed after storm damage.

Full day
02

Kadina, Wallaroo and Moonta

Use the Copper Coast towns for mining heritage, jetties, supplies and an easier two-night northern peninsula base.

Half to full day
03

One section of coast

Choose a single beach, jetty or Walk the Yorke section that suits the conditions rather than chasing a long list around the peninsula.

A very good day

Your Yorke Peninsula itinerary.

Pick one half of the peninsula, book park entry and campsites where required, and let wind, sea and fire conditions decide the outdoor plan.

  1. Choose north or south

Settle into the Copper Coast or continue to a southern base; do not attempt both ends as an arrival-day checklist.

  2. Give the coast a full day

Match the plan to wind, surf, fire danger and current park alerts, with a conservative route and daylight margin.

  3. Add heritage, not distance

Explore one town, historic site or short trail near the base before beginning the return drive.

  4. Connect the two halves

Only with an extra day, move between southern park landscapes and the Copper Coast towns without treating the transfer as sightseeing.

Before you go

The useful details.

Parking

Distances grow quickly south of the Copper Coast. Use marked town and park parking, buy Dhilba Guuranda–Innes vehicle entry online and carry fuel and water margins rather than relying on the next small settlement.

Accessibility

Town foreshore access and park facilities vary. Gatehouse Lodge has an accessible shower and toilet, but many beaches, ruins and cliff walks are uneven; confirm individual sites before travelling.

Dogs

Pets are not permitted in Dhilba Guuranda–Innes National Park. Council beach rules, holiday parks and accommodation policies vary elsewhere on the peninsula.

Conditions

The peninsula includes sheltered gulf beaches and exposed ocean coast. Check local warnings and weather, swim between flags where patrols operate and stay back from cliff edges and dangerous surf.
