Why go

The region is a journey, not a duplicate name for Mount Gambier.

Robe's coast, Naracoorte's fossil record, Coonawarra's red earth and Mount Gambier's volcanic landscape sit far enough apart to reward a real route. Choose two bases and let the Limestone Coast connect them.

Do these first

Three reasons to make the trip.

01

Naracoorte Caves National Park

Book one of the public cave experiences at South Australia's only World Heritage site; park entry is free but tour fees apply.

Half day
02

Robe and Beachport coast

Choose one coastal base for beaches, cliff-top views and a slower town day, letting wind and ocean conditions shape the outdoor plan.

Full day
03

Coonawarra and Penola

Pair the terra rossa wine region with Penola's heritage and a sober transport plan rather than driving between tastings yourself.

Half to full day

A very good day

Your Limestone Coast itinerary.

Book the cave experience first, separate tasting from driving and give the exposed coast a conditions-led day rather than a fixed checklist.

  1. Reach Robe or Naracoorte

Treat the three-and-a-half-hour drive as the transfer, choose one local walk and avoid adding a distant cave or winery after arrival.

  2. Book the underground anchor

Take the confirmed Naracoorte tour that suits the group's access needs, then leave room for its fossil displays and landscape.

  3. Choose coast or Coonawarra

Use a whole day for one direction, with a tour or designated driver for wine and a weather-led plan for the shore.

  4. Continue to Mount Gambier

Add a separate two-night city base for Warwar, Balumbul and the southern caves instead of calling the entire region a day trip.

Before you go

The useful details.

Parking

Naracoorte Caves, town centres and coastal lookouts have designated parking, but distances between them are substantial. Keep fuel and daylight margins and never stop outside marked bays on narrow or exposed roads.

Accessibility

Access differs by cave and coastal site. Tantanoola allows wheelchair and pram access, while Naracoorte directs visitors to tour-specific accessibility information; contact the operator before booking the whole route.

Dogs

Most national parks do not allow pets, while beaches, town reserves, wineries and accommodation set separate rules. Confirm each stop rather than assuming a regional dog-friendly label applies throughout.

Conditions

The coast includes exposed, often unpatrolled water. Swim between flags where patrols operate, follow local warnings and never enter caves, sinkholes or coastal water outside explicitly permitted access.
